Mark Twain wrote, “Man is the only animal that blushes. Or needs to.”
I wonder if we have lost this distinction from other animals. It’s not that we no longer have need to blush. Nothing seems to embarrass us any more.
Behaviors that once made us blush have gone mainstream and we merely shrug our shoulders:
- dishonesty
- crudeness
- insults
- cruelty
Have we lost completely our sensitivity to the values and behaviors that should mortify us?
“Create a clean heart for [us], O God; put a new, faithful spirit deep inside [us]!” (Psalm 51:10 CEV)
Amen!

No, only some of us. Most of us are remarkably kind, caring, helpful and respectful of others. What we need to do now is to stand up for and with those who are mistreated, insulted, disparaged, attacked or just written off as worthless. We need to call out the bully’s behavior when we see and hear it. We need to turn the other cheek FOR those less able to. We need to be the neighbor, not the enemy. May God’s will be done. Love really is stronger than hate…
